Never had there been a solar eclipse this dark before.
People on the streets of the small town carried around flashlights just to see in front of them, the streetlights barely making the town seem any brighter. Many people made up reasons for the darkness; that it was a punishment for something they had done, that it was an omen for something terrible to come… Of course, this happened to be the day that Sheila Nighthawk had her child.
Her husband, Charlie, was pacing outside of the bedroom impatiently. It was too dark out to drive, and rushing a woman who’s in the middle of having a baby to the hospital on foot isn’t exactly the best idea ever, so they had to do things the old-fashioned way and call someone over to deliver the baby at their own home. The man let out a long sigh of worry, running a hand through his light brown hair in an attempt to calm himself as he slowed to a stop, stealing a glance at the door once more. It had quieted down… Was it done? Was everything alright? He had to shut his dark brown eyes for a moment, attempting clear his thoughts as he turned away from the door again. He whipped back around with wide eyes when he heard the door open, the nurse poking her head out with a soft smile. “Mr Nighthawk?” she wondered, walking out a little. Charlie gulped, biting his lip a little as he played with the bottom of his dark grey shirt nervously. “Yes…?” he answered quietly. The nurse giggled at his nervousness. She saw this all the time. “Would you like to see your son?” she asked. Charlie’s eyes widened and he didn’t even answer her before he rushed inside the room, the nurse sidestepping out of the way for him with another giggle.
He skidded to a stop once he was inside, letting out another sigh that sounded much more relieved than earlier. His wife was lying in her bed, her long black hair messy and partially covering her tired, sapphire eyes, which were focused on the small, crying bundle in her arms. She looked up at Charlie with an exhausted yet joyful smile as he came to the side of the bed, kneeling down and gently brushing some of the hair from her face before kissing her lightly on the cheek. His eyes went to the child in her arms, and his smile grew. He wasn’t really squirming, though there was a small whine coming from his as he yawned, stretching out a little as he seemed to adjust his position in the blue blanket her was wrapped up in. His eyes were currently closed, leaving their color unknown, but the small tuft on his head showed the pale blonde shading of his hair. “Isn’t he perfect?” Sheila cooed softly. Charlie let out a soft chuckle. “Why, of course…!” he responded. The nurse came back inside, a clipboard and a pen in her hands. “Do you know what you want to name him…?” she wondered. The now-parents glanced at each other curiously, both of them thinking deeply into the question. It didn’t take long for Sheila to get an idea, looking over at the window in their room. “I’m thinking… Ombre.” she suggested, smiling back at her husband once more. Charlie raised an eyebrow at her, though the smile tugging at his lips hadn’t left. He looked back at the child. “… I like that.” he decided before turning to the nurse. “Our child’s name will be Ombre.”
